Okay, I'm scared...

Note: the author makes certain assumptions regarding Army policy based on intuition. The author has no idea what, if anything, the Army might do about this situation.

There, that should keep the PC Police™ at bay. Now that the disclaimer's out of the way:

Terrorists spray busload of civilians with gunfire

At least, that's my take on it. I don't have a whole lot to add to the story (at least, not that a non-moonbat wouldn't think of himself) but since I live in Honduras right now I figured I should really pay attention to this.

Today is my one-month anniversary of residing in Honduras. Obviously (no offense to the Honduran people) this isn't exactly my choice of residence. The Army had a slot to fill here, and my name was at the top of the list.* I'd like to be with my family this Christmas (not to mention any other day, I have a wife I miss very much and my boys are growing up without me... grrr) but I'm in the Army, hooah.** I figured it beats the crap out of being in Iraq.

So I got on the plane and went. Now, actually, Honduras can be a very sought-after assignment (consider the alternatives: Korea or combat), and I'm not arguing that, but I'd still rather be with my family. Plus God never sends me anywhere He doesn't plan to use me.† So, one month ago today, I arrived in this country.

This country, may I add, is lovely. Although I have seen only a tiny portion of Honduras, it is a tropical paradise. Well, rainy season starts in a couple months, we'll see if my tone changes then. But yeah. I left snotty comments on IMAO yesterday laughing at y'all freezing your butts off in the snow. Mwheh. It's 80° and partly cloudy here, just like every other day. So I have no complaints (other than that I miss my wife- have I made that point yet?) But last week they took us off-post and showed us all the places we weren't allowed to go, because the crime here is unbelieveable. So I (concluding that I don't need local food that much) made the decision that I will only rarely venture outside the gate. Why put myself at risk? Concertina wire is my friend. Keeps me safe.

So. This morning, I was flipping through news channels, and I saw something about "28 people killed on a bus in Honduras". My first thought was, good grief, that's terrible. My second thought was, why am I finding this out from CNN and not my chain of command? As I learned more about the incident, I realized that Chamelecon is about as far away from here as you can get and still be in Honduras. (Educated guess: I was not able to find a location for Chamelecon but I think it's a suburb of the larger city of San Pedro Sula. Never been near there, sure ain't trying to go now.) So it wasn't necessarily a real threat to any soldiers or this base. But it's still scary.

So. Let's pick apart the situation, shall we?

Point Number One: These people are terrorists. Why hasn't the media labeled them as such?

They stopped a bus filled with Christmas shoppers and hosed it down, killing a gaggle of innocent civilians, including six KIDS. Now- who does that sound like to you?

That's right, Palestinian suicide bombers. But even that group of Darwin Award winners has the common courtesy to blow themselves up when they commit acts of atrocity. What kind of sick people would hose down a bus to prove a point? That perfectly fits the description of "terrorist". Someone willing to go to any demented lengths to prove whatever point they have. And- their extremely important point, worth killing a bus full of kids, is-

Point Number Two: They oppose the death penalty.

What?!

These freakin' wackos killed a bunch of people to show that they're opposed to death? I bet the ACLU is already on the phone with them trying to get them to represent Scott Peterson and Psycho Mommy-killing Baby-kidnapping Lady. I really don't know what to add to that... it is beyond comprehension. I would venture to guess (and this is nothing but a guess, nothing to indicate that it's true) that they got some buddies in jail, that if not for the current law, would be facing execution. And maybe they figure killing kids is a good way to keep Lobo Sosa from winning, and possibly executing their terrorist friends. Pure supposition, but it makes sense, doncha think? They have to know that terrorism works. Look who's President of Spain now. But I think they're missing a key point:

Point Number Three: Terrorists have an extremely short life expectancy. The suicide bombers seem to understand this and don't even bother trying to survive. The "insurgents" in Iraq haven't quite figured this out, and keep shooting back. Morons. I would guess (uh-oh, more supposition) that these "gang members" were trained by Palestinians, but figured, screw that bomb crap, let's try to stay alive. Okay, they're officially being called "gang members". That may be true, but when somebody does something like this, you stop calling them "gang members" and start calling them terrorists. And what do we do with terrorists?

Point Number Four: That's right, we track them down like dogs and kill them like swine.

"My government won't tolerate the kind of massacre that has the objective of threatening and scaring the people. ... We are reacting with force," [President Maduro] said.
I applaud him, and I hope he's the sort of man that can and will back up that statement. I didn't think such men existed in politics until I saw President Bush after 9/11... it can be done.

Point Number Five:

Earlier this year, Alvarez claimed Al-Qaeda was trying to recruit gang members to carry out terror attacks, but U.S. and other Central American officials have said there is no hard evidence to support that.
Not surprisingly, this is the first I've heard of this. I can't even make a guess as to whether or not it's true. Before I left the States, my first sergeant referred to Honduras as "not exactly the focal point in the War on Terror", and I agreed with him. My security brief consisted of "you probably won't see al-Qaeda but watch out for criminals". I agreed with that, too. I honestly can't say whether I think al-Qaeda operates here or not. But I now have to admit it's a possibility.

But anyway, regardless of an al-Qaeda connection, these people are terrorists. Since we have established that, and since the official U.S. policy on terrorism is to hunt them down, and if necessary, unplug them from their source of supply, well... let's go. (about to overstep bounds as a lowly E-5... heh...) Finding punks who kill kids for fun... and killing the punks for fun... is not at all my mission, but... Let's just say that if for any reason Uncle Sam calls me on this one, I'm ready.

*-it was a very short list. The only other person that was on it is currently in Iraq.
**-Army expression for compliance. Actually can mean anything and everything except "no".
†-I have found out that the Army doesn't get to send me anywhere without God's permission first. It's nice to know I'm taken care of.

UPDATE: Part II (Capturing terrorists and finding out they might in fact be connected to al-Qaeda) is here. Part III here.

I keep trying to come up with a decent comment, but...just...that article...the terrorists...28 people...six kids...dude...that's just...evil.

If the Army ever decides that those foreigners need killin', watch out for the moonbats too. After all, Honduras didn't attack us on 9/11.

Oh, I know, right? I can hear the screeching now:

"There was no connection between Al-Qaeda and Honduran criminals! No war for rain forest!"

Hey, man, I thought you were still asleep... are you sure you're well rested? It's not evening yet.

I love Honduras. It is my second home and have been both to SPS and Chamelicon (mispelled I think) numberous times. The gang violence in all of Honduras and particular, SPS is out of hand.
You can not negotiate with evil. Evil is just that Evil. It can not be appeased, as it's only desire is to cause destruction and pain.
My reason for going to Honduras and SPS is that I am a volunteer Prison Director of an indepentant ministry here in the States that do missionary work in Central America. All of the members are businessmen from different churches who pay their own way to use their vacaction time to go there.
I have been going to the Central Prison in SPS for about 15 years. Last year I had the chance to speak to the "18 gang" who were locked up together. This was right before the escape occured and one of the gang assassins escaped with inside help. I was doing work in another prison on the day of the escape.
I have never looked into eyes that were so devoid of life as the day I spoke to the jailed "18 gang" members. One of my hobbies is scuba, and the closest I can relate to the men's eyes was the lifeless cold eyes of shark.
As I spoke to them, I would see a flicker of life in one man or another. Then, as quick as I had seen it, it would go away. The word I got was that their gang rule was that if any of them received Jesus, they would be killed.

God bless you, sir. I'll pray for you and your ministry.

The word I got was that their gang rule was that if any of them received Jesus, they would be killed. That really is scary. I thought this country was overwhelmingly Catholic. I was being sarcastic about the whole Honduran Terrorist-Palestinian Suicide Bomber thing. That rule makes them sound very Muslim. Hmm.

Curiosity: Do the inmates at Central Prison get fed, or do their families have to bring them their meals? They told us that the prisoners in Comayagua don't get fed.

Hey Brad
I have been in several of the Honduras Prisons such as the Central Pen in Sps, the prison just out of LaCeba I think and the new National prison just out of Teguc. I have always been told that if your family does not bring you food, you starve. However, I just cant beleive that is true. I think they do supply some subsistence.
THank you for your prayers. Here in the States I am the prison director of a ministry. As a part of that I get to be the jail chaplain of our local jail and front a Christian Blues Band called "Forgiven". You can hear our music at
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/writePage.cfm?myType=music&bandid=240544&bandnamesave=forgivenbluesband

thank you for what you do.
I love honduras. I hope you get to get to some out of the way places. If you have just been there a short time I could suggest some good places such as Roatan if you are a scuba diver or my favorite place in the world- Copan!
Have a great day
Carlos

We lived in GP medium tents for close to six months then built C-huts to live in. The first 3 months were hell, worked 12 on 12 off. My 12 on was 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM, the days were so hot you couldn't sleep. What little sleep you got was in a pool of sweat.

Facilities were less than prestine. We used the latrine with diesel fuel in a 55 gallon drum cut in half. I can remember seeing the lower enlisted on crap buring details. The smoke from the burnt feces covered the screen to our hut we used for working out. NASTY.

I can remember the temperature droping to about 60 degrees and seeing GI's wearing field jackets because of being aclimated to the 110 degree heat. Humidity must have been 110% plus. The GIs that tried to use soda or beer as water replinishment dropped like flies from dehydration.

While serving in Honduras we had a detail to watch the garbage dump as it was rumored the Honduran Army was shooting the local rumaging through the trash and the guys operating the dozer just covering the dead bodies.

When we arrived in Comayagua the air field could barely handle a C-130, when I left were were landing C-5As.

It only made sense, I went to the NCO Academy at Fort Ord and was a platoon sergeant. The old Spec Six mentality of non-supervisory positions had long died out.

Can do folks. Keep up the good work.

Children with ADHD

There is a perplexing state of affairs in today's society, there lies a strong correlation between the affluence of a society and the amount of disease that is present. There is also another correlation that troubles many a people and that is with affluence comes disease at an Earlier age.

Working with children and the parents of these children I often get asked the question, 'Why are Children with ADHD on the increase?'

The answer as you shall find is one that is both interesting and challenging.

Children of today are really no more different from the children of yesterday in terms of genetic makeup. However, if you examine the issue more closely you will tend to find that many children today have been given labels. For example, 'Oh, those are children with ADHD' or 'Those are the children who can't sit still.' Or 'That is the kid that always gets into trouble.'

These labels are not only destructive but also become a self fulfilling prophecy as it is repeated adnauseum.

So as a 21st century parent or a parent with a child with ADHD or a parent with children with ADHD, what knowledge framework do you need to equip yourself with to ensure your children live out their true potential?

Here is a quick reference list for thinking about ADHD
ADHD is a source of great frustration because it is misunderstood
ADHD medications are a great short term time buying device and should be avoided long term
The above point goes for any sort of drug consumption. Think about it for a minute. Unless you have a biochemical deficiency in your body like Type 1 diabetes where your body fails to produce enough insulin or any at all, why would you take an external drug? A body that is in balance is totally healthy. It is only when the body is out of balance that dis-ease symptoms start to creep up.
ADHD is a biochemical imbalance of the mind and body.
The Head of Psychiatry in Harvard states that drugs for ADHD simply mask the effects of ADHD. It does not cure ADHD. This is an important point because a cure implies never to have to take the medication. This means that once you start on medication you will have to be on it for the rest of your life i.e. you have medically acquired a dependency for a biochemical imbalance. That is like stuffing all your rubbish (problematic behaviors) into a closet (medication) where no one can see it. But if you continue to stuff more rubbish into that closet, one day you will not have enough space and need to do one of two things. You either empty the rubbish (the natural conclusion) or you get a bigger closet (i.e. change to stronger medication to control the symptoms). The choice is obvious but sometimes when you don't have the necessary tools to deal with ADHD you tend to think the bigger closet is the only option.
ADHD children are super sensitive to the emotions around them. Often they pick up emotional cues from their parents without realizing. Many parents come home frustrated or annoyed from work, the child with ADHD picks this up and starts to 'cause trouble' by becoming restless. Parents frustration increase because they just want some peace and quiet. They get angry which in turn is picked up by the child who then intensifies their activity. Things get way out of hand and some sort of punishment is handed down to the child who has no idea what just happened. The cycle repeats itself every so often.
Our brains are wired emotionally. Positive praise is interpreted as an analytical/thinking exercise. Negative criticism including scolding, name calling, physical punishment all go directly to the emotional brain of children with ADHD. This means in order to ensure you get your message across in the most optimal way, you need to learn how to communicate with your ADHD children the way they like to be communicated with.
Every negative comment requires 16 positive comments to neutralize the emotion. Save yourself the frustration and agitation by practicing positive communication.

The list is by no means complete. In dealing with children with ADHD there are a certain set of behavioural principles to follow. I will detail these steps in the coming weeks. I'll also build on the list as you continue to learn about what appears to be a mystical disorder known as 'Children with ADHD'

Hey Anonymous. You would not have happened to have been assigned to the 40th Supply and Service Company POL team? I was there at the same time. Worked with 1SG Bill Fleming. Do you remember a Spec Daryl Frost who died when the 5 ton he was driving rolled over?

I have been searching for any information about him or the whereabouts of his wife at the time. I think Uncle Sam owes her not only a lot of money, but an explanation.

Sure hoping you could help.
